Paying for Internet access at Hotels can be quite expensive. This is unfortunately the case at even budget hotels !
Just a couple of years ago it was difficult to come by free internet access in Paris. As recent as early 2007, the best way to find some free Wi-Fi was to go to McDonalds or their main competitor, Quick. Both places offered internet users free access. There was also the occasional hotel or café that offered it up for free. Other than that, while visiting Paris, you would have to pay for internet access.
In mid 2007 Paris started installing free Wi-Fi throughout the city. They began the effort with 260 access points throughout the city. Now, just two years later there are over 400 locations where tourists can use free internet access in Paris. Free Wi-Fi can be found in the city’s libraries, town halls, parks, gardens, and squares.
Keep in mind that not all hotels are going to allow you free internet access. When setting up your reservation, that is something to make sure you ask about, especially if you’ll be spending a good amount of time in your hotel room.
If you’re planning on bringing your laptop or PDA with you for a trip, thanks to the free internet access in Paris, you’ll likely be able to stay on top of things, whether business related or personal.
One thing to remember: if you are not planning on bringing your computer, but instead plan on using a computer available in one of the cafés, keep in mind the keyboards are a bit different to what we’re used to. That may slow you down a bit.
